OCULUS SOL

2012 • Indio, CA
Painted steel, LED, landscaping. 20' x 30' dia.

Oculus Sol, the 'eye of the sun,' is a sculptural gazebo that provides a focus for a community zocalo. The sculpture is based on bio-mimicry of the palm frond structure, a material that has historical uses in the making of shelters and crafts. Oculus Sol is a shaded gathering amenity by day then transforms into an illuminated vessel in the evening. Oculus Sol serves as the gateway into Indio's old town center as a stop along State Route 111 scenic highway.
